Cooperation Between the IMM and Frontex’ Fundamental Rights Office Continues

Representatives of the Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) on 15th and 16th May 2025 visited the Fundamental Rights Office (FRO) of Frontex in Warsaw in order to continue and intensify the successful cooperation between IMM and Frontex FRO. Throughout the visit experiences and best practices were exchanged and challenges in monitoring fundamental rights at the boarder discussed. Particular emphasis was put on strengthening future cooperation through shadowing each other’s monitoring operations in the field as well as having joint workshops and trainings.

The next meeting of Frontex FRO and IMM representatives will take place in June 2025 in Zagreb in the framework of IMM’s meeting with the Advisory Board to the IMM. Frontex is actively involved in supporting the IMM, whereas Frontex FRO Jonas Grimheden serves on the IMM’s international Advisory Board and has been its chair since February 2025. All EU Member States will have to appoint monitoring mechanisms by mid-2026.

The IMM paves the way for independent national monitoring mechanisms that all EU Member States have to appoint by mid-2026.
